The Recycle 1 “Meet the Team” is a series of articles that allow our clients and partners to get to know the team behind the brand.
Quetzaly, or “Q” as she is affectionately known, is a one-woman human resources department. She does it all, from payroll to insurance to worker’s compensation, benefits and recruiting. On top of it, she manages third-party vendors and software platforms. While she’s always juggling something, she loves being the employee that anyone can come talk to. Meet Q!
What drew you into a career in human resources?
This is my first experience in the recycling industry. I came to Recycle 1 initially from a temporary job placement agency. My background is in HR, but at the time, I needed something while I looked for my next opportunity. I began as a receptionist but quickly got back into HR when Recycle1 decided to bring that role in-house. Right now, I operate alone, and handle staffing, insurance, injuries and third-party companies.
What do you love most about it?
I really enjoy working with the employees and helping people. I want to be that person that everyone can go to. And I love doing a little bit of everything, it keeps things interesting.
What does Recycle 1 look for when hiring new employees?
Ideally, new employees have a background in the recycling industry. Many of our jobs require working outside, which can mean harsh conditions, especially in Arizona summers. It’s extreme weather. And we also look for people who have not had a string of multiple jobs – consistency is great. And of course, not everyone has experience in recycling and we will train the right person for the job.
What makes Recycle1 such a great place to work?
This is a company that really cares about its employees. They care as much about a person as their employee as they do about them as a regular person. Recycle 1 offers a very family-style environment. In general, they tend to be flexible with work schedules and they respect your time outside of the office.
What are your interests outside of work?
I spend a lot of time with my family. I have a five-month old daughter, so she takes up a lot of time. My husband and I also are big Lakers fans. We love going to sporting events and concerts.
What are you known for around the office?
My music! I always have different music playing in my office and I listen to almost anything. I think I’m also known for being friendly and for truly having an open-door policy.
